Conditional Admission

The University of Miami requires specific scores to satisfy the English entrance requirement:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80
  • TOEFL paper-based: 550
  • IELTS: 6.5

The University of Miami test code numbers are:

  • TOEFL: 5815
  • IELTS undergrad: 4861
  • IELTS graduate: 4862

Academically qualified applicants to the University of Miami, who are not able to take the TOEFL, or who have scored less than the required minimum (listed above), may be offered admission to undergraduate programs with the condition that they successfully complete level 5 of the UM Intensive English Program (IEP- that’s us!), OR obtain a 550 or higher on the paper-based TOEFL.

The Intensive English Program offers a paper-based TOEFL to IEP students, once in the Fall semester (October), and once in the Spring semester (March). Conditionally admitted students will have the first opportunity to register to take the TOEFL. This TOEFL is only valid for admission to the University of Miami, and no other university.

Undergraduate students applying to the University of Miami using the Common Application will need to select the semester they intend to begin, as they are applying for admission, not conditional admission. If a student is granted conditional admission, then the student’s file will be shared with us here at the IEP. Then, the student can  start at the IEP on the next available start date after receiving the UM admission decision.
